Life is Good in Balajura
Located in the City of Swan, the suburb of Balajura is situated just 14 km north of the CBD or central business district of Perth. The area, which was first established in 1905, was settled originally by Ernest Maltby Kerruish, who emigrated from the Isle of Man. Mr. Kerruish bought farmland at this site, which he went on to name Ballajura – the name or a farm in Maughold, which was located on the Isle of Man. Two other immigrants from the Isle of Man, Arthur Eaton and John Creer, joined Kerruish in cleaning the area to build a homestead and start farming. However, after a time, Kerruish moved his farming operations to Caversham as he thought the land was not fertile enough to be farmed. The Ballajura suburb was developed further in the 1980s when two sub-divisions were created. The Lakes Estate and Lakeshore subdivisions were built around parks and lakes and now comprise upmarket real estate. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, approximately 20,000+ people currently reside in the Ballajura area. The suburb, which is made up of about 9 square kilometres, is home to about a population 65% of which claim to be of Australian descent. Buses serve the suburb, which is home to one high school and a community college.
